Owen Malone has more than 35 years experience in working in intellectual property in both government and industry, the latter including 17 years in the wine industry. From 1989-95 Owen held the position of General Manager, Intellectual Property in Telstra Corporation, with overall responsibility for the company’s intellectual property policy, management and practices. He then joined Freehills as Executive Director, Freehills Technology Services Pty Ltd, a company established to provide intellectual property commercialisation consultancy services.

In 1998, Owen moved to the Foster’s Group to take up the position of Intellectual Property Director with responsibility for the Group’s intellectual property globally. In May 2011 with the demerger of Foster’s wine business, Owen was appointed to the position of global Director Intellectual Property for Treasury Wine Estates Limited.

Owen was a member of the Australian Government’s Advisory Council on Intellectual Property (ACIP) from 1996-2002 and the Chairman of ACIP from 1998-2002. He has been a member of the Advisory Board for the Graduate Program in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Melbourne, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia (IPRIA) and a member of the Wine Australia’s Legislative Review Committee.

He has been a frequent speaker at conferences and forums dealing with intellectual property management and commercialisation, having delivered some 60 presentations in Australia and overseas. He has also assisted the Australian Government, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and ASEAN in IP training and education programs throughout the Asia Pacific for more than 17 years.

In April 2003, Owen was awarded the Centenary Medal by the Australia Government for outstanding service to the advancement of Australian intellectual property.
