Starting the morning off is Dr Charlie Day, the Project Director for the Carlton Connect Initiative at the University of Melbourne. The Carlton Connect Initiative is an ambitious project to create Australia’s premier STEM innovation precinct anchored by the University of Melbourne. Prior to his current role, Charlie was the leader of Melbourne Ventures, the technology commercialisation company of the University of Melbourne, from its foundation in 2004 until 2010. Charlie currently serves on the board of the Murdoch Childrens’ Research Institute and is a member of their Translation and Commercialisation Committee.  Dr Charlie Day will be delivering insights into the topic of ‘Productivity’ and will be exploring the following areas: working closer with the university sector, considering an appropriate balance between access to ideas and products, and developing innovation-led growth and investment.

Next, Micheal Ellis, the Head of Culture at Vinomofo – one of Australia’s fastest-­growing companies and a leader in innovation, disruption and values­ based company culture – will share in-depth viewpoints regarding innovation culture in Australia. This includes, identifying, attracting, growing, retaining and mentoring the right talent (from as early as high school) and exploring the role of culture in an innovation-led economy.

Our last key speaker of the day is Patricia Kelly, the Director-General of IP Australia since December 2013. IP Australia administers intellectual property rights in relation to patents, trademarks, designs and plant breeders’ rights. Prior to joining IP Australia, Patricia was a Deputy Secretary in Commonwealth departments responsible for industry and innovation from 2004 -2013. Patricia has had a public sector career spanning over thirty years, including in the Department of Social Security and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. With a rich background in intellectual property rights and the public sector, Patricia will provide insightful acumens into the subject of commercialisation and moving from an idea to a business.
